Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu Fulminates Against Looting And Destruction Of Infrastructures By Protesting Youths
Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu LLB, The Technical Assistant on Communication, Office Of The Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement and A good governance and sustainable development advocate has strongly condemned the recent acts of looting and destruction of public and private infrastructures perpetrated by some individuals under the guise of protests.
While acknowledging the right to lawful assembly and peaceful protest as enshrined in the Nation’s groundnorm and as decided in plethora of cases, Amb. Nwachukwu stated that looting and destruction of Private and public assets as witnessed in Kano and other parts of the country undermine the legitimacy of the protest and causes harm to innocent citizens.
“The right to protest is an essential aspect of our democracy, but it must be exercised responsibly,” Amb. Nwachukwu said, “Looting and destroying properties only serves to distract from the core message of the protest and inflicts unnecessary harm on the citizens.
“While the majority of protestors in Lagos were peaceful, there have been instances of looting and destruction of properties during these events in other states. Businesses, public spaces, and even private residences have been affected, leading to concerns about the impact on communities and the overall message of the protests”.
Amb. Nwachukwu emphasized the importance of peaceful protests as a means to address legitimate grievances. He acknowledged the passion and energy of the youth involved in the protests, he highlighted the need for responsible activism and emphasized that expressing dissent should not come at the cost of destroying the very communities protesters aim to uplift.
He warned that destruction of properties has far-reaching consequences for communities and businesses. He maintained that beyond the immediate financial losses, there are long-term economic and social ramifications that can deepen existing inequalities and hinder progress.
He urged Security agencies across the country to investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the destruction of property while also calling for dialogue and compromise to address the underlying issues that sparked the protest
