Maiduguri Flood Claims 11 Lives, Rescue Efforts Intensify
A devastating flood has struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, leading to the tragic recovery of eleven decomposed bodies from various parts of the city.
The Borno State Police Command, led by Commissioner Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, has launched an intensive rescue and recovery operation in collaboration with multiple divisional police headquarters.
According to reports from the police, the bodies were recovered between 10:00am and 2:00pm on the 11th and 12th of September, from areas such as Lamisula, Jere, GRA, Bulabulin, and Dandal.
The heavy rains that caused the floods have wreaked havoc on several communities within Maiduguri Metropolis.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the Supervising Police Public Relations Officer for the Northeast, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, confirmed the efforts being made to prevent further loss of life.
“Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure effective rescue operations are ongoing, and we are committed to minimizing the impact of this disaster on the affected communities,” Wakil stated.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and cooperate with rescue teams to safeguard lives and property.
The police, alongside other emergency services, are on high alert as efforts to manage the flood crisis are expected to intensify over the coming days.
This flood is part of a broader trend of natural disasters affecting Nigeria, with many communities grappling with inadequate drainage systems and other infrastructural challenges that make them vulnerable to heavy rains.
Local authorities are appealing to the government and aid organizations for assistance in addressing the immediate needs of the displaced residents.
Efforts to recover more bodies and provide relief to affected individuals are still underway. Residents are advised to stay clear of high-risk flood zones and remain informed through official channels.
