Dambam: Police Address Viral 2020 Armed Robbery Video, Urge Public to Avoid Misinformation
The Bauchi State Police Command has issued a public warning concerning the resurfacing of a video from 2020 that has been widely shared online, sparking concern and confusion among viewers.
The video, which captures an armed robbery incident that occurred on February 18, 2020, along the Kano-Maiduguri road near Bam Village in Dambam Local Government Area, Bauchi State, has led to a renewed wave of misinformation.
According to the police, the footage, showing police vehicles in pursuit, has been misinterpreted by some as a recent event, potentially leading to unnecessary panic and dissatisfaction among the public.
The police clarified that the vehicles were involved in a chase of armed robbers through the bush, resulting in the successful apprehension of two suspects.
These individuals have since been charged with armed robbery, and various pieces of evidence were recovered at the time.
The Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad, has expressed concern over the potential for such misinformation to disrupt public order.
He emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing it, highlighting the serious consequences that can arise from the spread of inaccurate or outdated content.
In a statement, CP Muhammad stressed the need for responsible behavior online, urging the public to consider the impact of their actions.
He reminded citizens that while the truth may sometimes be uncomfortable, it is far more valuable than the distortions that can arise from misinformation.
Quoting José N. Harris, he remarked, “There is a certain allure in honesty, even if it may be difficult to accept. Conversely, those who deceive others manipulate reality to make it appealing to the unmotivated, impressive to the uninformed, and formidable to the vulnerable.”
The Bauchi State Police Command continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
