Ibrahim Zaki University Azare being the most excited university to be established in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, the University is to be owned by the community; meaning it’ll only exist to maintain itself and not meant for profit making.
During the 2018 Education Summit organized by Katagum Forum in Azare, The former Secretary to the Federal Government Alh. Mahmood Yayale Ahmad (Ajiyan Katagum) as Chairman of the Occasion challenged the gathering by saying “It is high time we establish a Community University here in Katagum”.
He further said “We have all what it takes to come up with our own University. We have the man power and the resources”
According to him “All we need now is the will and of course the commitment”
Mallam Ibrahim Zaki was the first settler in Azare town. He was the son of Mallam Lawan who died at Yayu village near Chinade. Mallam Lawan first settled at Nafada in Gombe emirate and letter move down to Yayu where he had a son called Zaki. After the death of his father Mallam Lawan, Mallam Zaki went to Sheikh Usman Danfodio in Sokoto to flag office.
In 1814. Mallam Zaki graduated from Sheikh Dan Fodio’s Islamic institution at Sokoto, at about 1809, he first settled at Tashena, village about 9 kilometers away from the present Azare, Mallam Zaki started ruling from 1807 to 1914 he was succeeded by his brother, known as Sulaiman Adandaya from 1814 to 1816. The third emir of Azare Mallam Dankauwa resigned from 1816 to 1846, in Azare Katagum LGA from his reign not more than eight rulers ruled this region up to date.
On 19 September, 2019, a delegation of Katagum Forum and other stakeholders in Katagum visited National University Commission (NUC) with a proposal of registering Ibrahim Zaki University. They were warmly received by the NUC officials.
In a statement, Dr. Musa Babayo (Talban Katagum), said documents on the Forum’s intent for the development of the private university were submitted to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed.
Babayo, said the Forum proposed the institution “considering its experience in the provision of educational services to the general public, particularly in the Bauchi State, and cognisant of its obligation to meet the current demand for higher education with strong moral perspectives in Nigeria.”
The decision to set up the university was taken, and thereafter, Katagum Forum was formed to handle the necessary modalities, including how to meet the requirements of NUC.
