APC Group in Plateau Demand Reversal of Humanitarian Minister Appointment
In a press conference held in Jos, the Plateau State chapter of the Progressive Volunteers for Tinubu (PVT) voiced strong opposition to the recent appointment of Dr. Nentawe Yiltawa Goshewe as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. Citing concerns over his qualifications and experience, the group is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the appointment, calling instead for a qualified woman with a background in humanitarian services to assume the role.
The PVT highlighted that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs plays a critical role as a support system for Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations, addressing needs resulting from economic hardship, displacement, and crisis situations. According to the group’s spokesperson, TN Timkat, the state coordinator for PVT, effective leadership in this ministry requires a person who not only understands humanitarian work but also resonates with the struggles of the people in need.
“We believe that women, as primary caregivers, bring a unique perspective essential to humanitarian leadership,” Timkat stated. “Their empathy, resilience, and direct experience supporting families make them well-suited to lead programs that truly respond to community needs.” He emphasized that appointing a woman would inspire confidence and ensure that programs align with the real needs of the people.
The group expressed specific concerns over Dr. Goshewe’s qualifications, noting that his background does not include experience in humanitarian services or with non-governmental organizations, both seen as vital for managing the ministry effectively.
In a set of outlined demands, the PVT called for:
Reconsideration of Dr. Goshewe’s Appointment: They urged President Tinubu to reevaluate the decision due to his lack of experience in humanitarian work.
Appointment of a Qualified Woman: The group is advocating for a female candidate with proven experience in humanitarian affairs, with an emphasis on foreign grant attraction and sensitivity toward vulnerable populations.
Merit-Based Appointments: The PVT requested that future appointments prioritize competence and dedication over political considerations.
Enhanced Support for Vulnerable Populations: They stressed the need for policies that prioritize women, children, and marginalized groups during times of crisis.
Community Involvement in Decision-Making: The group emphasized that engaging local communities would improve the effectiveness of humanitarian programs.
The Progressive Volunteers reaffirmed their support for President Tinubu’s vision of a progressive Nigeria, believing that addressing this appointment aligns with the administration’s commitment to integrity and excellence. The PVT emphasized that empowering women in humanitarian roles would foster a more compassionate society and address the needs of the country’s most vulnerable.
The conference concluded with the PVT urging Nigerians to support a leadership change in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to ensure effective management and positive impact on citizens’ lives.
