The Bauchi State Government has confirmed that six additional deaths have been recorded due to the recent flood disaster, bringing the total number of deaths to 24.
The recent flood in Bauchi North has led to the displacement of 122,330 people, with 24 reported deaths and 167 individuals injured. This disaster has had a significant impact on the region, affecting many communities. The scale of the displacement and the number of casualties highlight the severity of the situation.
KATAGUM DAILYPOST reports that 18 people reportedly lost their lives in severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall last month, with the Bauchi North Senatorial District being the most affected.
Meanwhile, communities affected by the disaster continue to struggle with its aftermath, as many homes were washed away and over 300 farmlands destroyed, leaving residents homeless and stranded.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Government House in Bauchi on Monday, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Yakubu Wanka, revealed that 163 people were also injured in the floods.
Speaking after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed, Wanka explained that the flooding, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), was triggered by persistent heavy rainfall affecting the northern parts of the state.
She disclosed that 122,330 people have been displaced by the floods, with Shira, Giade, Dambam, and Itas Gadau Local Government Areas being the worst hit.
The floods also destroyed 60 culverts and damaged 12 major roads, disrupting social and economic activities.
She added that the disaster led to the loss of 11,183 livestock, the destruction of 2,000 houses, 178 electric poles, and the destruction of 52,035 homes.
Commissioner Wanka noted that Governor Bala Mohammed has visited the affected communities and provided relief materials, both material and non-material, to support the victims, adding that a committee has been set up to assess the extent of the damage caused by the disaster.
She expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its swift response, which included the deployment of a delegation comprising four ministers by President Bola Tinubu to offer support to the flood victims in Bauchi.
“The state government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and relevant agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to alleviate the suffering of those affected. Many displaced persons are currently taking shelter in host communities across the state,” she stated.
Wanka assured that the committee established by the governor will provide a comprehensive assessment of the flood damage and recommend long-term solutions.
