Bauchi Launches 2024 Tree Planting Campaign at SAZUG

The Bauchi State Government today officially launched its 2024 tree planting campaign, themed “One Person One Tree,” at Sa’adu Zungur University’s Yuli Campus.

This initiative, spearheaded by Bauchi Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), aims to combat environmental challenges across the state.

Representing the Governor, His Excellency Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Muhammad Auwal Jatau, emphasized the importance of tree planting as a sustainable solution to the state’s environmental issues.

In his address, Governor Mohammed highlighted the detrimental effects of illegal tree felling for charcoal, firewood, and timber, urging citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices.

“The best way to address our environmental challenges is for every citizen to plant, own, and nurture a tree. A greener Bauchi State begins with us,” the Governor stated.

The event, hosted by Sa’adu Zungur University, was praised by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatima Tahir.

She expressed gratitude to the state government for choosing the university as the campaign’s launch site and commended Bauchi ACReSAL for its extensive afforestation efforts.

Professor Tahir revealed that over 1,000 trees of various species had already been planted at the Yuli Campus, with plans to extend the initiative to another two hectares at the university’s main campus in Gadau.

“The theme, ‘One Person One Tree,’ aligns perfectly with our university’s green campus initiative, ‘One Name One Tree.’ We are committed to continuing our support for afforestation activities to tackle the pressing environmental challenges facing Bauchi State,” Professor Tahir remarked.

In a call to action, the State Commissioner of Housing and Environment, Rt Hon Danlami Ahmad Kawule, urged stakeholders and citizens to fully embrace the “One Person One Tree” initiative.

He highlighted the campaign’s role in promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The 2024 tree planting campaign represents a crucial step in Bauchi State’s ongoing efforts to foster a sustainable environment, ensuring a greener future for generations to come.
