Kannywood set to showcase deaf films in Kano

The Kano-based Hausa-language film industry in Northern Nigeria, Kannywood, is set to showcase films by and for the deaf community, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.

This initiative, which aims to highlight the stories and experiences of the deaf, was announced by Abba El-Mustapha, the chairman of the Kano State Film Industry – Kannywood, during an official visit by a deaf group to his office on Thursday.

El-Mustapha promised the group that he would connect them with potential supporters both within and outside Kannywood. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration in providing a platform for the deaf community within the vibrant Kannywood film landscape.

Rabi’u Aliyu Adam, the public relations officer of the deaf group, expressed their desire to contribute to the film industry by entertaining the community, particularly those with special needs.

He noted that this partnership would not only create employment opportunities for the deaf but also educate and entertain others with special needs.

Adam mentioned that they have already begun producing films using cell phones and requested support from the Kano government to further their efforts.
