The Bauchi state government has distributed free 300 card stoves to residents as part of the on-going efforts to tackle land degradation, deforestation, and climate change.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Dallami Kawule, said it was also meant to discourage felling of trees across the state.
Kawule urged the beneficiaries to put the items into good use, warning them not to sell them out for temporary gains.
He gave the assurance that the state government would continue to do its best for the management of the environment.
Also speaking, the district head and Chiroman Bauchi, Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba, said the initiative was a welcome development, emphasising that it would help in tackling climate change threats.
In a remark, the project coordinator of the World Bank-assisted Agro-Climatic Resilience and Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, Dr. Kabir Ibrahim, said studies had shown that one card stove “if judiciously utilised for seven years would save about eight fully grown trees.”
According to the coordinator, preparations are on-going for the construction of at least 3, 500 immobile cooking stoves in people’s houses across the state.
